Yemenis demand Saleh's immediate resignation: activist

The Yemeni nation will accept nothing less than the 'immediate resignation' of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a spokesman for the Berlin-based Yemeni pro-democracy movement, Osamah al-Doaiss said in an interview with IRNA.
Yemenis demand Saleh
Pointing out Yemenis were 'fed up with 33 years of Saleh's one-man rule', al-Doaiss
said, 'We want the immediate resignation of the president because he simply has no
legitimacy among the people who have taken to the streets for days and weeks.'

"It made 'no sense' for Saleh to hold on to power as the street protests
in Yemen would continue until 'justice has been established," he stressed.

'There will be no justice as long as this man -Ali Saleh- is in power,' said al-Doaiss.

'We want freedom, democracy and justice for the Yemeni nation that has been on the
streets for days and weeks. Our main demand is democracy and free elections,' he
added.

The political activist pointed out that more and more military units, among them
generals and senior commanders, were turning their back on Saleh by joining the
people's revolution.

Referring to the dismal situation in his country, al-Doaiss said a main focus should be placed on combating hunger and poverty in Yemen.

He stressed Yemeni expats in Germany were not only showing solidarity with the freedom struggle of their compatriots back home but were also actively supporting it
by organizing demonstrations across Germany.

Asked about the role of Saudi Arabia in Yemen which has a history of political meddling in the affairs of its neighboring countries, al-Doaiss said he did not believe that Saudis would march into his country like the way they did in Bahrain.

Although Saudi Arabia is 'very much tilting' towards Saleh, they will 'not risk' such
an intervention in Yemen like they did in Bahrain because they see that the whole
Yemeni nation is protesting peacefully on the streets, he said.

He added that between five and seven million Yemenis were believed to have demonstrated against the Saleh regime on Wednesday.
