Iran condemns Afghanistan blasts

On Saturday, a series of explosions in the city of Jalalabad in the eastern province of Nangarhar killed at least 35 people and injured more than 100 others.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Sunday voiced Tehran’s sympathy to the Afghan government, nation and the families of the victims over the “inhumane and unIslamic” measure.

She further dismissed “terrorism, extremism and endangerment of the lives of innocent people” as unjustified and unacceptable.

The Iranian official also underlined the necessity for concerted efforts by the international community to counter terrorism and extremism, calling for unity to stop violence and extremism.
On Saturday, a person presenting himself as a spokesman for the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group said the group claimed responsibility for the Jalalabad blasts. An online posting allegedly from the group had made the same claim.

The attack comes despite the presence of foreign forces in the war-torn country.
The US-led combat mission in Afghanistan officially ended on December 31, 2014. However, at least 13,500 foreign forces, mainly from the United States, have remained in the country in what Washington calls a support mission. NATO says the forces will focus mainly on counterterrorism operations and training Afghan soldiers and policemen.
