UAE Rep. slams UNSC regarding Syrian chemical case
Nusseibeh called on all parties to work in a spirit based on the principles upon which the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was established, in its technical type, including compatibility and non-politicization.
“In this month of 1993, the Secretary-General opened the door for signing the Chemical Weapons Convention in Paris, and 130 countries signed it at that time, which indicates the existence of a broad consensus at the international community which makes this treaty one of the most important historical achievements in the field of disarmament. But today, the Syrian chemical file is still, unfortunately, one of the most politicized files in this council, and this is what we have noticed during the first half of our membership in the Security Council”, Nusseibeh said during a session of the Security Council on Thursday about the chemical file in Syria.
She reiterated her country’s firm stance represented in its refusal and explicit condemnation of the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances by anyone and in any place, in which its use constitutes a flagrant violation of the provisions of the OPCW and international law.
Nusseibeh stressed that making tangible progress in this file requires engaging in a constructive dialogue.
