Palestinian hunger striker released

Israel has released Palestinian hunger striker, Malik al-Qadi on Saturday two months after his detention without trial transferring him to hospital for medical treatments.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said on Saturday that Malik al-Qadi was transferred from an Israeli jail to a hospital in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah over his deteriorating health.

The inmate ended his hunger strike on Wednesday, after Israeli authorities decided not to renew his administrative detention.

Palestinian inmates regularly hold hunger strikes in protest at Israel’s administrative detention policy, which is the practice of arresting and holding individuals without charging them. It also allows Israel to renew the prison term of Palestinian inmates indefinitely.

There are reportedly more than 7,500 Palestinians held at Israeli jails. Seven hundred of these inmates have apparently been incarcerated under the administrative detention.

Some Palestinian prisoners have been held under the administrative detention for up to eleven years.

Human rights groups have criticized the practice, saying Israel’s detention of Palestinians without trial or charge amounts to a violation of rule of law.  

In August, UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory Robert Piper urged Israel to decide the fate of prisoners held under the administrative detention without trial or charge.
