Yemeni president announces new cabinet lineup

On Friday, the Yemeni leader unveiled the new 37-member cabinet, including Prime Minster Khaled Bahah, 29 newcomers and seven ministers who served in the previous government.

The newcomers include Defense Minister Major General Mahmoud al-Subaihi, a top army commander in southern Yemen, Foreign Minister Abdullah al-Saaidi, a veteran diplomat, and the country’s first female Information Minister Nadia al-Saqqaf.

The new cabinet also includes members of the Shia movement of Ansarullah.

The announcement came hours after tens of thousands of Yemeni people took to the streets to protest against US interference in the country’s internal affairs.

On November 2, Yemen’s main political parties, including the Ansarullah revolutionaries, signed a UN-brokered truce deal in a bid to put an end to the political crisis crippling the country.

Under the deal, Hadi and Bahah were tasked with forming a new government of technocrats before the Ansarullah revolutionaries withdraw from the capital, Sana’a.

The Ansarullah activists are yet to comment on the Yemeni president’s announcement.

The revolutionaries have driven al-Qaeda militants out of many areas in the country. They also played a major role in the ouster of the country’s longtime dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012.
