‘US ME failures prompt new Iran bans’

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the US has tightened sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear energy program in a bid to compensate for its failures in the Middle East.
‘US ME failures prompt new Iran bans’

“The new US sanctions against Iranian companies and individuals are [meant to] make up for the failure of the White House’s policies in the region,” First Vice Speaker of Iran's Majlis Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard said on Monday.

“The new sanctions will not only fail to have any achievement for Washington but will weaken the US stance in the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 [group of world powers],” he added.

On August 29, the US government announced the imposition of a new round of sanctions on over 25 individuals and companies, including shipping firms, oil companies, airlines and six banks despite the fact that Iran and the six world powers - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US and Germany - are in the process of talks with the intention of resolving the West’s nuclear standoff with Iran.

Aboutorabi-Fard noted that the Israeli regime, the US and their mercenaries have suffered heavy defeats during the recent developments in the region, citing the victory of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip against Israel in the recent war and the failure of the US, West and the Tel Aviv regime to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Israeli military unleashed aerial attacks on Gaza in early July and later expanded its new military campaign with a ground invasion into the Palestinian strip.

After more than seven weeks of Israel’s war on Gaza, Palestinian resistance groups and Israeli officials on August 26 reached an agreement on a permanent ceasefire for the besieged Gaza Strip. Over 2,200 Gazans were killed and 11,000 others injured in the Israeli offensive.

Under the deal, Israel has agreed to ease the blockade on Gaza and open border crossings for more aid to pass through to the enclave.
