The funeral service for Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Asefi was held Saturday in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq.

According to al-Furat news website, senior religious and political figures, including Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Head of the Shias Awqaf Department Seyed Alaeddin Mousawi and Deputy Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki attended the ceremony.
Grand Ayatollah Fayyadh led the Salat al-Mayyit and then the body of late Ayatollah Asefi was laid to rest in Wadi as-Salam Cemetery in the holy city.
Ayatollah Asefi was the representative of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq.
He also served as a member of the supreme council of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought.
The prominent cleric passed away on Thursday morning shortly after his morning prayer. He had long been suffering from liver cancer.
