The US has been rocked by mass shootings throughout its history.
Hundreds of people killed in mass school shootings in US


While thousands of people have lost their lives, many more have been left injured. Schools and universities have been the most frequent sites of these massacres.
As in the 20th century, the US has seen many mass school shootings in the 21st century, causing the loss of lives of staff, students, and teachers.
Here is a list of some of the bloodiest mass school shootings since 2000:
March 21, 2005
Red Lake, Minnesota
Jeff Weise, 16, first murdered his grandfather and the man’s companion at their home before heading to Red Lake High School.
He then killed five students, a teacher, and staff before committing suicide.
April 16, 2007
Blacksburg, Virginia
Seung-Hui Cho murdered 32 people, including students and faculty members at Virginia Tech, in two separate attacks, making the most deadly school shooting in modern US history.
The murderer was an undergraduate student who was originally from South Korea. He then killed himself.
April 2, 2012
Oakland, California
One L. Goh, a former nursing student, murdered seven people at Oikos University, a Korean Christian college. It was the bloodiest mass killing in Oakland's history.

Newtown, Connecticut
Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before driving to the Sandy Hook Elementary School. He then killed 26 more people, including 20 students. Lanza later killed himself.

Isla Vista, California
Elliot Rodger, 22, murdered six people and injured 14 others by gunshot and stabbing.
The incident took place near the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also took his own life.

Marysville, Washington
A 15-year-old freshman, Jaylen Fryberg, killed five students in the school cafeteria of Marysville Pilchuck High School in Washington state.
He then killed himself.
Oct. 1, 2015
Roseburg, Oregon
A 26-year-old student, Christopher Harper-Mercer, murdered eight students and one teacher at the Umpqua Community College campus, and left nine injured. It was the deadliest shooting in Oregon's modern history.
He then committed suicide by shooting himself.
Feb. 14, 2018
Parkland, Florida
Seventeen people were murdered and many others were injured by 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Cruz was caught in Coral Springs after he walked away from the school following the massacre. He was charged with murder and attempted murder.

Santa Fe, Texas
The accused shooter, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, killed 10 people -- eight students and two teachers -- at Santa Fe High School. He faces a sentence of up to 40 years to life in prison.
Nov. 30, 2021
Oxford, Michigan
A 15-year-old sophomore student, Ethan Crumbley, with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, killed four people, including a teacher.
Crumbley was arrested and charged with some crimes, including terrorism.
May 24, 2022
Uvalde, Texas
One of the deadliest mass school shootings occurred in Uvalde, Texas, when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, a former student at the school, murdered 19 students and two teachers.
Police killed the attacker.
March 27, 2023
Nashville, Tennessee
A total of six people, including three children and three adults, were killed in a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee.
The heavily armed female shooter was killed during a shootout with a five-member police team that engaged her on the second floor of the Covenant School.​​​​​​​
