“Media should serve establishment of Islamic unity”, Pakistani professor
Dr. Seyedah Sahar Zaidi from Pakistan, in an address to the ninth webinar of the 37th Islamic Unity Conference expressed her views on importance of unity among Muslims and the role of media, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

She said,” The main objective of media is to disseminate the news and also to inform people on the latest issues across the globe though it could also be at the service of disinformation.”

The Pakistani thinker noted that the present situation in the Islamic countries is quite clear on the dire need for solidarity more than any other time.

She referred to the Syria war as an instance of the media being used to serve the interests of the enemies when Takfiri (excommunication) terrorists published fake news in order to deviate attentions from the realities of the war.

Dr. Zaidi said,” Syria was first plagued by civil war though the media interfered to expand the conflict to a war between Shias and Sunnis by blaming an attack on the Sunni neighborhoods to be allegedly launched by the Shia or a raid on the Shia positions to be carried out by the Sunni side.”

She stressed importance of the media to publish the truth rather than fake news as a way to prevent hostile plots to divide Islamic unity.
She called for high quality material on the media run by Muslim states in order to absorb audiences from across the globe.

Pakistani media expert called for workshops for the Muslim journalists in line with promoting Islamic unity and also more conferences that convene thinkers to exchange views on boosting solidarity in the world of Islam.

The 37th Islamic Unity Conference is underway in the capital Tehran as a number of Shia and Sunni scholars attend the webinars and the meeting to be held by World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought. This year the elites and religious figures attending the event discuss the theme “Islamic Cooperation to Achieve Common Values”.  The conference is held on 28th September to 3rd concurrent with the Islamic Unity Week which marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
