Swedish cleric urges for legal ban on desecration of holy books

13 Feb 2023 - 16:06

Manager of Gothenburg mosque has called for a law which bans desecration of holy books and religious texts as far-right activists in Europe have burnt copies of Qur’an.

Faraj Semmo, CEO and prayer leader of Gothenburg mosque, in an interview televised on SVT channel, has voiced his support for legalization of a ban on desecration of holy books calling Qur’an burning as a hate-mongering behavior that frightens the public, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

He noted that any protest should be carried out in a peaceful manner.

He said,” We have constantly stressed in our sermons that we are all Swedish Muslims and will follow laws in confrontation with Islamophobia” adding that Muslims should use their right to vote to convey their message to politicians.

Faraj Semmo referred to a previous bid by 15 Muslim associations in Sweden who had called on the government to legalize ban on desecration of religious sanctities.

Hussein Fafar Warsame, director of a mosque in Stockholm suburbs said,” We do not want desecration of holy books Qur’an, Bible and Jewish texts to be legal in this country.”

Rasmus Paludan, leader of the far-right party Stram Kurs held Qur’an burning protests in different Swedish cities.

Paludan and his radical group have been behind nearly all desecrations of holy Qur’an in Sweden. The last instance for that was a Qur’an burning protest held in front of the Turkish embassy in the capital Stockholm.
