Far-right Dutch politician desecrates Qur’an in second incident over a week

24 Jan 2023 - 12:09

The Dutch leader of far-right group, Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA) tore pages of holy Qur’an in the second anti-Islam incident in Europe during the past week.

Edwin Wagensveld tore out pages from the holy Qur’an in the Hague, the administrative capital of the Netherlands on Sunday before posting a video of the provocative move on Twitter.

The local police have reportedly issued the permission for the heinous act on the condition that he did not burn the holy book.

The video showed that he later burned the torn-out pages in a pan.
Last October, Dutch police arrested him before he had a chance to burn a Quran during a rally attended by small group of Pegida supporters in Rotterdam.

This makes the second Islamophobic act after Danish-Swedish far-right activist Rasmus Paludan burnt a copy of holy Qur’an in front of Turkish embassy in Sweden.

The insult has drawn much condemnation from across the world of Islam for the perpetrator and also the Swedish authorities who issued permission for the heinous act saying that it should not be justified as freedom of expression.
