Israeli attack on Iran’s consular section in Damascus violates international law

3 Apr 2024 - 15:34

A Turkish professor has highlighted the legal aspect of the recent Israeli attack on the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Syria adding that Israel is trying to shift the international community's focus away from Gaza.

Hazar Vural Jane, the assistant professor at Istanbul Aydın University, in an interview with Iran’s Mehr News Agency (MNA) referred to the 1961 Vienna Convention that states diplomatic missions enjoy immunity stressing that Israel’s April 1st attack  against the Iranian embassy in a third country is an unlawful act.
She said,” The international should work within the same accountability framework for the 193 states registered to the UN, but the situation may be different for some states. This is one of the main problems in practice.”
She referred to the sporadic attacks conducted against supports of the Hamas resistance movement as a show of power and added, “This direct attack against Iran can be said to point to a dangerous situation in the region. The escalation of tensions between the USA and Iran, which have been confronting each other through proxies in the past months, is now taking place between Israel and Iran, which carries the same risks considering the multiple relations in the region.”
