'Iran taking N-transparency measures'

Iran has implemented three of the five transparency measures it had previously agreed to, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano says.

“Iran has implemented three of the five practical measures agreed with the agency in the third step of the Framework for Cooperation. Two of these were implemented after the agreed deadline of 25 August,” Amano said during a meeting with the IAEA’s Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday.

Iran has begun discussions with the IAEA on the two remaining practical steps, he added.

Iran and the IAEA signed a joint statement on November 11, 2013, to outline a roadmap for mutual cooperation on certain outstanding nuclear issues.

On May 20, the two sides held a technical meeting within the Framework for Cooperation agreed in November 2013. During the meeting, they agreed to five practical measures which should have been implemented by August 25 for more cooperation.

Tehran had already informed the agency that the August 25 deadline for the implementation of all steps would not be met and that further talks would be needed by the end of September.

The UN nuclear agency’s chief further said that the IAEA “continues to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran under its Safeguards Agreement.”

Iran has repeatedly insisted on the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear energy program.

Amano also pointed to his visit to Iran in mid-August and talks with senior Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, and said Tehran is firm and fully committed to accelerate the resolution of all outstanding issues.
