Iran holds mystic poet Hafez commemoration ceremony

Iran has held the 16th commemoration ceremony for the Persian mystic poet Hafez in the southern city of Shiraz where the poet is laid to eternal rest.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended the ceremony along with Germany and Tajikistan ambassadors to Iran.

Many Iranian and International cultural scholars and Persian literature experts also participated in the event held at the poet’s tomb in Shiraz on Friday.

The President Ahmadinejad delivered a speech on the 14th century poet's universal idealistic views at the ceremony.

German city of Weimar and French capital of Paris also hosted honoring ceremonies in recent days to mark the Persian poet’s birth anniversary.

Born in 1315, Hafez is best known for his melodious sonnets and for intertwining a taste of Persian culture into his poetry.

His collected works composed of series of Persian poetry (Divan) was first translated into English in 1771 by William Jones.

Many western writers such as Thoreau, Goethe and Ralph Waldo Emerson have been influenced by Hafez poems.
