Iran urges for political solution to Ukraine war

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has stressed diplomatic solutions to the ongoing war in Ukraine warning that sending arms to the warring sides in Ukraine will only prolong the conflict.

In a phone conversation with his Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Sunday, Iran’s foreign minister reiterated Tehran’s opposition to war.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is against war and has proposed a political solution to the crisis.”

Russia began what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moscow said it was aimed at defending Ukraine's pro-Russia population in Donetsk and Luhansk, eastern Ukrainian regions, against persecution by Kiev.

Several Ukrainian regions have ever since voted in separate referendums in favor of joining the Russian Federation.

Kiev and its Western allies, however, accuse Moscow of seizing those territories by force.

The West has also been assisting Ukraine with state-of-the-art weaponry and other military equipment despite Russia's repeated warnings that such a measure would only prolong the war and torpedo prospects of peace between the two countries.

In a statement on Friday, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations dismissed the latest claim by the United States and its allies regarding Russia’s use of Iranian drones in the Ukraine war.

The mission said the anti-Iran claims are aimed at influencing the six-month periodic report of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2231.

The Iranian and Danish foreign ministers also exchanged views about possible avenues for the expansion of relations.

Amir-Abdollahian said historical relations between Tehran and Copenhagen are a “valuable asset.”

The Danish foreign minister placed a premium on talks with Iran and said both sides should proceed with initiatives to enhance relations in various fields.

Amir-Abdollahian and Rasmussen agreed to draw up a mechanism to expand political and consular consultations.
