‘Rectal Prolapse Repair’ and ‘Rectal Cancer Surgery’ laparoscopy surgeries were performed on February 15 in Razavi Hospital in northeastern city of Mashhad on the sidelines of the 14th annual congress of Iranian Coloproctology Society.

During the ‘Rectal prolapse repair’ surgery, Dr Abbas Abdollahi, head of surgery department in Razavi Hospital, stated: “The two surgeries are outstanding in their live broadcast for Iranian surgeons and those from Germany, Swiss, England, and Denmark on a virtual platform, and exchange of expert views while the operation is in progress”.

The colon and rectum subspecialist called laparoscopy an internationally standard procedure used in surgeries for years, adding: “We do not need to cut into the abdomen in this procedure, and only a laparoscope (a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera) is inserted through an incision in the abdominal wall”. According to him, the rectal cancer surgery took four hours to finish.

Saying that rectal prolapse or protrusion of intestine is a common condition, Abdollahi noted that in the operation “special surgical tools and a tiny camera are inserted through the abdominal incisions to repair the rectal prolapse”.

He also said that women suffer from the condition nine times more than men due to pregnancy and childbirth, citing overweight and immobility as important causes of the problem.

The 14th annual congress of Iranian Coloproctology Society has been hosted by Ghaem Hospital of Mashhad in cooperation with Razavi Hospital.
