Trump predicts “Tremendous surge” for post-coronavirus US

17 Mar 2020 - 13:54

US President Donald Trump has predicted that the US economy will see “tremendous surge” following the end of coronavirus pandemic.

Trump made the comment during a Monday press conference, further admitting that the American economy “may be” sliding into recession.

"I think there's a tremendous pent up demand both in terms of the stock market and in terms of the economy,” he said. “Once this goes away, once it goes through and we’re done with it, I think you’re going to see a tremendous surge.”

The US president added that the covid-19 outbreak could continue up to summer.

“I don’t, number one, determine recession,” Trump said. “I just say this: We have an invisible enemy. We have a problem that, a month ago, nobody ever thought about.”

The US has declared a state of emergency amid rising anxieties over the fast-moving coronavirus.

Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer is preparing to propose at least $750 billion to tackle the outbreak.

“We will need big, bold, urgent federal action to deal with this crisis. The kinds of targeted measures we are putting together will mainline money into the economy and directly into the hands of families that need it most," the New York Democrat said in a statement. "Importantly, this proposal will also ensure our medical professionals have all the resources – including physical space and equipment – they need to provide treatment and keep Americans safe, among other people-focused initiatives."

The Senate minority leader’s proposal is supposed to put money "directly into hands of American people," an idea also promoted by Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney.

The GOP lawmaker called for efforts “to help families and small businesses meet their short-term financial obligations, ease the financial burden on students entering the workforce, and protect health workers on the front lines and their patients by improving telehealth services."

His proposal involves giving $1,000 to every American adult to combat the coming recession.

"Congress took similar action during the 2001 and 2008 recessions. While expansions of paid leave, unemployment insurance, and SNAP benefits are crucial, the check will help fill the gaps for Americans that may not quickly navigate different government options," Romney's office said.
