Iran, Russia discuss JCPOA, Caspian, Syria

Zarif and Lavrov met on the sidelines of the 51st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministerial meeting in Singapore on Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by Tass news agency.

The two sides discussed the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the situation in Syria, and preparations for the fifth Caspian summit due to be held in Kazakhstan's Aktau later this month, the statement read.

The top Iranian and Russian diplomats also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation, especially the implementation of agreements on boosting trade and economic ties, it added.
  Prior to the meeting, Zarif sat down with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as well as his Philippine, Japanese and Turkish counterparts.

All the officials, Zarif said, expressed their resolve to preserve the JCPOA and use innovative methods to bolster economic relations with Iran.

The summit's tagline for a “Resilient and Innovative” calls on ASEAN members to take measures toward countering unilateral policies which are against the world order.

Back in May, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the JCPOA despite objections from other signatories of the multilateral accord and decided to reimpose sanctions on Iran.
