No-one was injured. Police say a man has now been arrested and remains in police custody.

Mosque leader Dr Ibrahim Hammad said, "One window was smashed whilst people were praying. We have had many messages about it and residents in the area are concerned. It did shock us it's an awful thing to do.

"Thankfully the damage isn't too bad and thank God everyone is okay.
"With lots happening, especially after London, many of our members are worried. But I trust the police, and we live in a safe area.

"This was just one individual's behaviour. Nottingham people will stand shoulder to shoulder with us against this.

"People from churches have come to visit us and offer support. We are all close to each other we can't say everyone is not close to one another because we are."

Another member of the mosque said: "The people in the masjid [mosque] apprehended the suspect. The police came quickly and have taken the suspect to the police station.
"No one was hurt or attacked at the mosque and this is now a police matter. We want to thank you for your concern and duas [invocations]."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police, said: "A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage following an attack on a mosque.

"Witnesses detained a man after a window was smashed at the Masjid Umar Mosque and Islamic Centre in Alfreton Road, Radford, at around 11.25pm yesterday (Monday July 3) while people were inside.

"Officers then arrested a man, who remains in police custody, and recovered a hammer. It is believed to be an isolated incident.

"Officers are trying to trace further witnesses to the damage, including occupants of a red vehicle that assisted in the detention of the suspect.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 1131 of 3 July, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The incident comes after after two men were arrested by police after a meat believed to be pork was allegedly smeared on the door of the Al-Quba Masjid mosque, at the Fiveways multi-faith centre in Sherwood on June 18.

As well as the door to the mosque being targeted, a Union Jack flag was also placed at the scene.
