“Today, the two governments are resolved to develop bilateral ties in political, economic, cultural and scientific areas,” Rouhani said at a Sunday meeting of high-ranking Iranian and Thai delegations in Bangkok, co-chaired by the president and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

“Thailand can be a bridge for Iran’s economic ties with the East Asia region,” he said, adding the Islamic Republic, with its proper infrastructure and its rail and sea corridors, is the best gateway for East Asia’s trade relations with Central Asia, Caucasus and Europe.

Rouhani further pointed to the positive atmosphere created after the July 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, saying that the two countries should grasp the opportunity to boost bilateral trade.

The Thai premier, for his part, emphasized that a new chapter should be opened in the history of Tehran-Bangkok relations, adding that his government is resolved to deepen the ties in all fields.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
