Araqchi raps double-standard human rights policies

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi on Monday criticized international bodies like the United Nations over their discriminatory approach toward Iran on the issue of human rights.
Araqchi raps double-standard human rights policies

Iran has had good cooperation on human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, Araqchi said in a meeting with Iranian ambassadors and envoys here in Tehran.
He referred to Iran’s collaborations with the UN’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and its rapporteurs, and criticized those behind a UN resolution on Iran’s human rights due to be put on vote later this week.

“The elements in this resolution contradict the human rights realities in our country,” Araqchi stressed.

The Iranian diplomat further underlined that dialogue is the only way to promote and support human rights, and urged all countries to support Tehran’s position and oppose the political use of human rights resolutions.

Saudi Arabia is pushing the UN General Assembly’s human rights committee to condemn Iranian and Russian intervention in Syria, a move that prompted complaints on Tuesday from the delegations of Iran and Syria.

The non-binding draft resolution, prepared by Saudi Arabia and co-sponsored by Qatar and some other Arab nations, the United States, Britain, France and other Western powers, was presented during a meeting of the assembly’s Third Committee, which focuses on human rights.

The Syria resolution and similar declarations on Iran, North Korea and Myanmar are expected to be put to a vote as early as this week, diplomats said.
