The ceremonies in the cities of Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra, Perth and elsewhere, have also witnessed the growing participation of new Muslim converts.

The ethnic, racial, linguistic and sectarian differences have not stopped the massive presence of Muslims in these ceremonies, either.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, started holding ceremonies from Thursday, Muharram 1, to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.
Imam Hussein (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members, including Hazrat Ali Asghar (AS), were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya.

They were martyred in the battle of Karbala on Ashura- the tenth day of Muharram which is the first month on the lunar calendar.
Muharram mourning ceremonies reach their climax at noon on Ashura, reported Iqna.

In Australia, they are expected to be attended by more devotees of Imam Hussein (AS) this year because Ashura falls on Saturday.
