A senior Iranian official has praised Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as "a symbol of resistance" against foreign powers, saying he is nearing the final victory.

“The one who is nearing the final victory is Bashar al-Assad, as the symbol of resistance in Syria, and those countries which are helping the Syrian people,” Ali Akbar Velayati, the foreign affairs' adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, told reporters on the sidelines of a core group meeting of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Tehran on Saturday.
Iran would continue with its fight against terrorism and is confident that the anti-terror campaign would emerge victorious, he added.
Velayati said the Islamic Republic has played a key role in the fight against terrorism in the region, adding that compared to Iran, no other country has managed to take a serious step in this regard except those like “Iraq, Syria and Lebanon which are with Iran and are its allies.”
The president of the Center for Strategic Research of Iran’s Expediency Council said that the Syrian people are pursuing objectives different from those of certain Western countries, stressing that the majority of the Syrians support President Assad.
Since the beginning of the foreign-backed crisis in Syria, the US and its reactionary regional allies have been seeking to break the resistance front against the Zionists, he noted.
Velayati’s remarks came on the same day that Syrian army troops established full control over the hilltops overlooking the city of Harasta, located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Damascus, as well as those behind Douma, situated about 10 kilometers (six miles) northeast of the capital.
On Friday, Syrian armed forces launched a large-scale military offensive against Takfiri terrorists in the southern countryside of Aleppo, located 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of Damascus.
The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the United Nations.
Iran’s advisory presence in Syria
Also speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the MSC meeting, the chairman of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said that Iran has advisory presence in Syria.
The senior Iranian lawmaker added that Iran would keep its advisory presence in Syria as a policy.
He said Russia’s airstrikes against terrorists’ positions in Syria have been very effective both militarily and psychologically and have prepared the ground for liberation of terrorists-held areas in the Arab country.
“So, we should wait for new pieces of news in coming days,” the Iranian lawmaker said.
Boroujerdi noted that terrorist groups are a serious concern for all regional countries.
Russia began its military campaign against terrorists in Syria on September 30 upon a request from the Damascus government, shortly after the upper house of the Russian parliament gave President Vladimir Putin the mandate to use military force in Syria.
Since the beginning of the Russian anti-terror military campaign in Syria, around 530 strikes have been conducted by the Russian Air Force. Hundreds of terrorists and dozens of command posts, depots and other Daesh infrastructure have been destroyed so far.
