On Sunday, Mehdi Hashemi introduced himself to Evin prison in Tehran after the court of appeal upheld his jail sentence.
Back in March, the 45-year-old was handed down a 10-year prison term on charges of embezzlement, bribery and fraud. The court also ordered him to pay fines and financial penalties, barring him from holding public offices. Hashemi, however, was acquitted from espionage charges.
The court says Hashemi received bribes from Statoil ASA to help the Norwegian oil company win a favorable contract in Iran’s South Pars gas field. Hashemi rejects the charges, saying they are aimed at tarnishing the image of his father.
