Al Azhar grand Sheikh:

"Destruction of ancient sites is Haram."

Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar, prominent Sunni seminary, denounced the recent destruction of ancient sites in Syria saying that collapse of old remnants or smuggling of the archeological assets is Haram (forbidden in view of Islam).

Ahmad al Tayyeb, prominent Sheikh of Al Azhar University, issued a statement forbidding the destruction and smuggling of ancient assets in Islamic countries and demanded protection of the archeological sites in the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria against the invasion of ISIL, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
 
He called the protection of the archeological site as a full war and warned against destruction of the ancient sites in Mosul, Iraq, by ISIL terrorist group.
 
Prominent Sunni cleric referred to the historical background of Palmyra as one of the most important and ancient cities in the Middle East urging for rescue of the city from ISIL terrorists.
 
Ahmad Al Tayyeb, also demanded international bodies not to let the DAESH terrorists destroy the ancient city of Plamyra same way they did to the archeological sites in Iraq and Libya.
 
Last Thursday and in an invasion of the museum of Palmyra, the ISIL terrorist group collapsed a number of the statues in this museum.
