Turkey welcomes Lausanne statement

Turkish officials have welcomed Iran and world powers's arrival at a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program, expressing hope that it will result in a comprehensive deal by end of June.

"We are very happy that this deal was made yesterday,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday in Lithuania in reference to the mutual understanding reached between Iran and the global powers in the Swiss city of Lausanne a day earlier.

Cavusoglu expressed hope that the mutual understanding could finally end in a comprehensive deal, urging the two sides to do more to achieve that objective by the end of June.

Iran and P5+1 group of countries - Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany - along with officials from the European Union finally reached a mutual understanding, which resulted in a joint statement, on Tehran’s nuclear program after eight days of marathon talks in Lausanne.

Many countries and international organizations have hailed the joint statement as a major achievement, with many calling it a big victory for proponents of diplomacy across the world. However, the mutual understanding has infuriated Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branding it a “historic mistake.”
