Baker: US, Israel should not seek ‘perfect’ deal with Iran

Former US secretary of state James Baker has warned the United States and Israel about destroying the chance of a nuclear agreement with Iran by seeking a perfect deal.
Baker: US, Israel should not seek ‘perfect’ deal with Iran
"Neither the US nor Israel should let the perfect be the enemy of the good," Baker said on Monday.

Speaking about nuclear negotiations held between Iran and the world powers, Baker criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his unrealistic expectations from the talks.

“If the only agreement is one in which there is no enrichment, then there will be no agreement,” he said.

Netanyahu, who has repeatedly announced his opposition to a nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group, delivered a speech at the US Congress earlier this month and warned about a potential nuclear agreement.

However, the Obama administration has been trying to reach a comprehensive accord over Iran’s nuclear program.

Baker called on President Barack Obama to seek congressional review for any deal with Iran, although the US president may not be required to do so.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee will vote in mid-April on a controversial bill requiring Obama to submit any agreement with Iran for a congressional review.

The legislation would require Obama to submit the text of any deal to Congress and would ban the White House from lifting any sanctions for a period of 60 days so that Congress could hold hearings and debate the deal.
