Call for expansion of Iran-Bangladesh ties

Vice-President for Executive Affairs Mohammad Shariatmadari called for reinforcement of all-out relations with Bangladesh here on Sunday.

Shariatmadari made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Minister of Religious Affairs of Bangladesh Motia Rahman.

The current level of Iran-Bangladesh trade transactions is not satisfying, he said, stressing that big steps should be taken for expansion of mutual economic cooperation.

Rahman, for his part, said that Bangladesh attaches great importance to expansion of relations with Islamic countries, Iran in particular.

The two countries enjoy ancient-old, historical and cordial relations, the Bangladeshi minister concluded.

Bangladesh with a 148-million population is located in Southeast Asia, to the east of India and its capital city is Dhaka.

Bangladesh which was before 1971 called the Eastern Pakistan, declared independence on the 26th of March of that year after achieving a victory in liberation war.

Some 90% of the people of Bangladesh are Muslims and the remaining 10% is Hindu and followers of other faiths.
