President arrives back from Turkmenistan

President Hassan Rouhani arrived back from Turkmenistan's capital city, Ashkhabad thereupon a two-day visit on Wednesday evening.

The president was received in the airport by his First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri and His Eminence the Leader of Revolution's International Affairs Adviser Ali Akbar Velayati.

Rouhani was accompanied in this visit by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Head of Presidential Office Staffs Mohammad Nahavandian, President's The Iranian president who was on a visit of Iran's northeastern neighbor at the top of a high ranking political, economic, and cultural delegation attended a dinner ceremony held in his honor by his Turkmen counterpart, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

In addition to meeting and holding talks with President Berdimuhamedow, President Rouhani attended the meeting of the two countries' high ranking delegations.

It was at the end of that meeting the 17 cooperation documents were singed by the high ranking officials of the two countries in the presence of both countries' presidents.

Offering an address at the meeting of merchants and economic activists of Iran and Turkmenistan and participation in a joint press conference were among the other activities of the Iranian president in this visit.


The presidential delegation included the Special Adviser Hossein Fereydune, Culture Minister Ali Jannati, Head of Department of Environment (DOE) Ma'soumeh Ebtekar and President of the Central Bank Valiollah Seyf.


 
It is worthwhile to note that in a joint press conference held by Iran president and his Turkmen counterpart, Rouhani has called for the further enhancement of trade exchanges along a transportation corridor which connects Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Rouhani said in the event more efforts are needed for the major transportation line, known as the North-South Transport Corridor, to be activated as it can serve the business and economic interests of the countries in the region.

“The two countries (of Iran and Turkmenistan) are determined to activate the North-South Corridor, which goes through Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, in order to meet the interests of the all countries in the region,” Rouhani underlined.

Rouhani went on to add that Iran and Turkmenistan have agreed to expand their trade volume from the current USD 3.7 billion to USD 60 billion in the next 10 years, adding that the two sides have also decided to increase the volume of their trade via railway and road by three and two folds, respectively, in the same period.

Rouhani also stated that Iran is ready to help Turkmenistan’s industrial enterprises by providing technical assistance and basic materials.

He touched upon the potential for the cooperation of the two countries in the Caspian Sea, saying that Tehran is ready to engage in joint operation with Ashgabat on marine-related activities including the activation of seaports and shipping lines.

“Iran and Turkmenistan view the Caspian Sea as the sea of peace, friendship and brotherhood,” Rouhani said.
