"I extend my condolences to the Saudi government and nation as well as the Al Saud family on the demise of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud," President Rouhani said in his message.

"I pray for the forgiveness of the bygone, patience of his family and success and prosperity for the Saudi nation and Government," the Iranian president added.

King Abdullah reportedly died at a hospital in Riyadh, where he had been receiving medical treatment for several weeks.

King Abdullah, who was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh in late December, had been suffering from pneumonia and was reportedly breathing with the help of a tube.

Salman was named Saudi crown prince in June 2012 after the death of Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz. Salman has recently represented King Abdullah at most public events because of the monarch's ailing health.
