Police said the suspects were detained during ‘strike and search’ operations across Pakistan on Friday. The detainees were transferred to an unidentified location for interrogation.

Some 109 Afghan nationals were also arrested in the operation, police officials said.

Pakistan’s Interior Ministry has issued arrest warrants for 6,777 suspects in connection with the school attack.

Over 4,000 of the suspects are from Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan.

Police have also stepped up security in Peshawar, and plan to establish walk-through gates and metal detectors at the entrance of schools.

On December 16, a group of pro-Taliban militants stormed an army-run school in Peshawar and killed about 150 people, including 132 students. Some 120 students were also injured in the raid.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it was carried out in retaliation for the Pakistani army’s major military offensive in North Waziristan tribal area which borders Afghanistan.

The Pakistani army launched an operation against militant hideouts in North Waziristan in June after a deadly raid on Karachi Airport ended the government’s faltering peace talks with pro-Taliban militants.
