Addressing the 122 members of the ICC for the first time on Monday, Mansour said that Palestinian have agreed to join the tribunal in the hope of ending Israeli crimes.

“We view the ICC as the international legal and peaceful mechanism to combat impunity and seek accountability and justice,” Mansour said.

“It is the court where the Palestinian people desire to seek justice for the war crimes and crimes against humanity being perpetrated against them by Israel, the occupying power,” he said.

The Palestinian official added that Palestine “may very well be the 123rd state party” to the international tribunal but the timing for membership is up to its leaders.

Palestine secured an observer status at a meeting of the ICC in New York on December 8. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had threatened that Palestine would join the court to sue Israel over crimes against Palestinians.

Israel launched a 50-day war on the Gaza Strip in early July. About 2,140 Palestinians, mostly civilians, including women, children and elderly people, were killed in the Israeli onslaught. Around 11,000 others were injured. Tens of Israeli soldiers were also killed by the Palestinian resistance retaliatory attacks.

On November 29, 2012, the 193-member UN General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state.
