Russia censures ‘hostile’ US sanctions

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has lashed out at the US Congress for passing fresh sanctions against Moscow, describing Washington’s move as a "hostile" act.

"This move by the United States is of course hostile," Lavrov said in an interview with Russia’s Interfax news agency on Monday.

On Thursday, the US Congress unanimously approved the Ukraine Freedom Support Act, which includes bans against Russian oil production imports, weapons exports, and financial institutions that process the transactions.

It also authorizes the supply of $350 million worth of weapons, training, and defense equipment for Ukraine over three years.

The bill, however, should be signed by US President Barack Obama to take effect.

Lavrov said Obama “now has a choice whether or not to sign this law."

Moscow's response to the US sanctions will depend on their "practical application,” and whether or not they go into force, Lavrov further noted, adding, the measures could even hit some Ukrainian businesses.

"This example shows that it's not concern for Ukraine that lies at the base of this initiative, but a maniacal wish to punish Russia for all conceivable and inconceivable wrongdoings," he added.

The West accuses the Kremlin of having a hand in the crisis in eastern Ukraine, which erupted when Kiev launched military operations in mid-April to silence pro-Russia protests there. The Russian government, however, denies the allegation.
