Kurd woman among leaders fighting ISIL in Kobani

A Kurdish woman is among the senior military officials leading the pitched battle against the ISIL Takfiri group in the Syrian town of Ain al-Arab, known as Kobani to Kurds.

"Mayssa Abdo, known by the nom-de-guerre of Narin Afrin, is commanding the YPG in Kobane along with Mahmud Barkhodan," the head of the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, said on Sunday, using the abbreviation of the Kurdish People's Protection Units.

According to reports on Sunday, fierce battles continued in Syria's Kobani, as Kurdish resistance fighters pushed back the ISIL militants from some areas in the besieged town.

The Takfiri terrorists, however, have been advancing into some parts of the town that have been under ISIL attack since mid-September. The ISIL Takfiri terrorists have reportedly been dispatching additional forces to Kobani from other areas in Syria, including its stronghold of Raqqa, in an effort to break the resistance of the Kurdish fighters defending the town.

"Those who know her say she is cultivated, intelligent and phlegmatic," Mustefa Ebdi, a Kurdish activist from Kobani, said.

The border town is still under ISIL fire despite more than three weeks of airstrikes by the US-led coalition on the militants' positions.

The militants are facing strong resistance from the Kurdish fighters. The fighters defending the town have inflicted heavy losses on the Takfiri militants, killing at least 36 of them on Saturday.
