Ukraine ceasefire not working: NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) says the ceasefire agreement in east Ukraine is not working and Russian troops are still active in the region.
Ukraine ceasefire not working: NATO

The organization’s top US General Philip Breedlove said, "The situation in Ukraine is not good right now," following a meeting with NATO military chiefs in Lithuania on Saturday.

In relation to a truce between Ukraine and pro-Russians in the country's east he said, "Basically, we have ceasefire in name only."

"The number of events, and the number of rounds fired and the artillery used across the past few days match some of the pre-ceasefire levels. The ceasefire is still there in name, but what is happening on the ground is quite a different story," he added.

The general’s statements came after representatives from the Ukrainian government and pro-Russians agreed to cease fighting and create a demilitarized zone in order to bring lasting peace to eastern Ukraine.

The nine-point deal includes creating a 30-kilometer (18-mile) buffer zone and a ban on Ukrainian fighter jets flying over the conflict zone.

The deal was reached following talks in the Belarusian capital of Minsk where a ceasefire was agreed on September 5.

The ceasefire is still in place despite alleged violations from both sides.

The Kiev government and the West accused Russia of arming the pro-Russians and sending Russian troops to the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. However, Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations.
