In June 2014 the group ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) official spokesman, Abu Mohammad Al-Adnani, called for ISIS militants to continue taking over key cities of Iraq and threatened to take their battle to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, referred to in the statement as the “filth-ridden city”. The following Muslim leaders from all denominations and schools of thought hereby declare: • The shrines in Karbala and Najaf are sacred to all Muslims. Both Imam Ali and Imam Hussein are revered as important figures in Islam. Millions of Muslims visit the shrines every year from many different countries and all Muslim denominations. • We vehemently condemn such threats that are abhorrent to all Islamic values and principles, and cannot be considered as representative of any denomination within Islam. Acts of violence and brutality committed by ISIS are unislamic and barbaric. • The threats to Najaf and Karbala and its holy shrines as well as the repeated attacks on the Askari shrines in Samara, are a matter of grave concern to all Muslims and we demand action from Muslim countries and international bodies responsible for protecting Islamic heritage to safeguard these holy places as well as all other places of worship in Iraq from attack.
