Iran pushing for NAM role in Gaza

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has instructed the country’s foreign minister to employ all resources available to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to put an end to Israel’s atrocities in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In a telephone conversation, Rouhani assigned Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in Vienna for talks with the Sextet of powers over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, to utilize NAM’s full potential to end the conflict, send humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to Palestinians, treat the injured and lay the groundwork for immediate action by the UN Security Council.

Rouhani, whose country holds NAM’s rotating presidency, also made telephone calls to the heads of key NAM member states, the head of Arab League and leaders of regional countries, underlining the need for prompt measures by the international community and regional states to stop Israel’s onslaught against Gaza.

The Israeli regime’s intense bombardment of the coastal sliver since July 8 has killed nearly 120 people and wounded hundreds others.

Meanwhile, Tel Aviv is reportedly taking steps toward a ground incursion into the coastal enclave. An Israeli military spokesman said 20,000 Israeli reservists have been mobilized for a possible ground operation in Gaza.

Palestinian resistance movements in the blockaded Gaza Strip have responded to Israel’s aggression by targeting towns and cities deep inside the occupied Palestinian territories with rockets.

The Israeli regime has imposed an all-out land, aerial, and naval blockade on Gaza since June 2007.
