'Iran, Qatar plan joint free trade zone'

An Iranian official says the Islamic Republic and Qatar plan to establish a joint free economic zone, with the southern Iranian province of Bushehr and its adjacent provinces being the trade hub.

In an interview with IRNA on Sunday, Mohammad Hossein Barkhordar, a member of the presiding board of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, said general agreements had been reached between Iran and Qatar regarding the trade zone.

He added that the expansion of foreign trade particularly with neighboring and regional countries will boost the Iranian economy.

“Since joint investments with neighboring states can pave the way for the influx of foreign capital into the country, the expansion of cooperative ventures with Qatar herald a market boom for entrepreneurs grappling with stagflation,” Barkhordar said.
The official further noted that Qatar could be a good market for the Iranian exporters of food and construction material.

The remarks come less than a week after Akbar Torkan, a top aide to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, made a visit to the Persian Gulf country. During a meeting with Qatari Minister of Economy and Commerce Sheikh Ahmad bin Jassim Al Thani, the two sides exchanged views to boost bilateral ties between Tehran and Doha in the fields of economy and commerce.
