Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has censured the European Parliament (EP) for a resolution against the Islamic Republic, saying the move shows that Europe has a wrong understanding of the human rights situation in the country.

During a meeting with the Iranian Parliament’s staff in Tehran on Saturday, Larijani slammed the anti-Iran rights resolution, adding the move was "certainly absurd."

Tehran's interim Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani also denounced the European lawmakers for what he called dependency on the United States and following its dictates.

On Thursday, the European Parliament passed a resolution on the European Union’s strategy towards Iran, expressing concern over the alleged human rights violations in the country.

It also claimed that Iran’s presidential election in June 2013, which led to the victory of President Hassan Rouhani, was "not held according to the democratic standards valued by the EU."

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham warned that the recent EP resolution will be injurious to Europe’s interests.

Afkham said it will be "definitely to the detriment of Europe" to follow the lead of "extremist groups and currents, particularly under the circumstances that the more realistic spectrum of the European Parliament lawmakers and independent European politicians consider the current changes in [Iran-Europe] ties as being in line with mutual interests."
