Cleric: The Lebanese Government Must Confront Israel, Reject Foreign Impositions

Referring to Lebanon’s political climate, Al-Khatib stated: “Self-interest and personal agendas are driving the country’s affairs, while unity is essential. We must stand together as one body in the face of threats.”
Cleric: The Lebanese Government Must Confront Israel, Reject Foreign Impositions
He warned that in the past, certain factions invited Israeli intervention against their own people, leading to massacres and internal strife. “Today, sectarian provocations and domestic divisions must not derail the country from its rightful path,” he said.
Unity, Resistance, and National Priorities
Al-Khatib emphasized that religious and sectarian diversity is not a problem, and that religion should serve as a tool for unity and public good—not division and hostility.
Addressing the issue of resistance weapons, he stated: “Our arms exist to defend Lebanon—not to serve any particular group. The real problem lies not in the presence of weapons, but in Israeli aggression and foreign interference.”
He urged the government to focus on internal development, agriculture, and public welfare rather than implementing foreign agendas or attempting to disarm the resistance. “Lebanon’s real challenges require practical solutions—not external dictates,” he said.
Support for the Lebanese Army
Al-Khatib praised the Lebanese Army’s efforts to maintain internal security and called on the government to adopt a clear and decisive policy toward Israel. “We appreciate the army’s actions against enemy threats and expect the government to resist foreign instructions,” he added.
In closing, he called on all Lebanese factions to work toward national progress, unity, and protection of the homeland. “Political differences must not lead to division or harm to the country,” he said.
Regional Context and UN Response
Al-Khatib’s remarks come amid Lebanon’s ongoing internal challenges and external pressures. The government has faced criticism over its response to Israeli aggression and its implementation of international resolutions—particularly Resolution 1701.
In this context, Candice Ardil, spokesperson for the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), also expressed concern over Israeli attacks and affirmed that, despite the challenges, UNIFIL will continue its mission under Resolution 1701.
