Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an interview with Al-Mayadeen network, said: "Iran did not target the countries of the region; rather, it targeted American bases, which were the source of the aggressions."
Baghaei further noted: "The meeting scheduled to be held on Monday in the Sultanate of Oman will be a fundamental step toward ensuring stability and security in the Persian Gulf region."
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson had previously, explaining the process of the formation of these talks, stated: "Decision-making about the meeting between Iran and the Persian Gulf littoral states is not a matter of today and yesterday, but the result of a process. Keep in mind that many important events occurred in these six months. On the surface, it appeared that the Islamic Republic of Iran targeted American military bases on the soil of these countries, but we have always emphasized that we have no desire for war with these countries and believe in respecting their national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Our attacks were in fact defensive actions against the source and origin of the attack on Iran."
He also, regarding the American attacks on the Lamerd sports hall, said: "Every American missile that targeted the sports hall in the city of Lamerd carried 180,000 shrapnel pieces."
