Iranian cleric calls for dialogue and greater Muslim unity

A senior Iranian cleric says Muslim unity does not require eliminating religious differences, but rather preventing disagreements from turning into hostility.
Iranian cleric calls for dialogue and greater Muslim unity
Hujjat-ul-Islam Mohammad Reza Peysepar, a scholar and former imam of the Newcastle Mosque in England, made the remarks in an interview with Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Peysepar emphasized the influential role of religious scholars in promoting unity, saying people place significant trust in their clerics. He argued that stressing common ground while respecting the beliefs of other Islamic schools can strengthen social cohesion.

He pointed to joint religious ceremonies and the participation of Sunni and Shia scholars alongside one another in various parts of Iran as practical examples of this approach, describing the trend as an important and positive social model.

“Unity does not mean eliminating differences,” Peysepar said, stressing that Shia, Sunni and other Islamic traditions have their own identities and practices. Differences over scholarly or historical issues, he added, should be addressed through dialogue and research rather than insults.

Peysepar also linked Islamic unity to national cohesion, saying all Iranians, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation, should feel they share in the country’s future. He argued that fair public services, attention to economic concerns and equal opportunities are essential to strengthening social trust.

He further called for greater rationality, empathy and vigilance across the Muslim world, warning that divisions can be exploited by adversaries.

Peysepar said the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday provides an opportunity for Muslims to focus on their shared spiritual heritage and the Prophet’s message of mercy, whom the Quran describes as a “mercy to the worlds.”
