Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 40th International Islamic Unity Conference, Mawale said the true purpose of reading the Quran is not merely recitation, but understanding its teachings and putting them into practice.

He emphasized that the Quran encourages Muslims to think, engage in dialogue and follow a straight path while avoiding division and conflict.

Mawale also condemned extremist and takfiri movements that seek to create divisions among Muslims. Drawing on his experience in Zambia, he recalled being criticized and even declared a disbeliever by some individuals because of his cooperation with Shiite Muslims.

He stressed that Shiism is not a separate religion, but part of Islam, and said differences between Islamic schools of thought should never become grounds for hostility or exclusion.

Mawale concluded by praying for the success of Muslims worldwide and calling for Muslims, non-Muslims and freedom-loving people to unite under the banner of solidarity.

His message came at the closing ceremony of the 40th Islamic Unity Conference entitled ‘Islamic Unity in the Thought of the Martyred Imam, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’ held by World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought.

Hundreds of Shia and Sunni scholars from across the globe attended the four-day event held in the Iranian capital Tehran with sideline meetings held in the holy city of Qom and the Sunni-majority Provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan, Kurdistan and North Khorassan on August 27-30.
