40 journalists held in Israeli prisons: rights group

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) says about 40 Palestinian journalists, including five women, are currently held in Israeli prisons, following the recent arrest of journalist Mohammad Awad in Ramallah.

According to PPS, more than 250 Palestinian journalists have been arrested or detained since the Gaza war began, while three others remain under house arrest.
The organization also reports that more than 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed during the war, including two who died in Israeli prisons. The whereabouts of journalists Nidal al-Wahidi and Haitham Abdul Wahid remain unknown, as they are reportedly being held in enforced disappearance.
PPS describes the arrests, killings and alleged mistreatment as part of a systematic campaign against Palestinian journalists and efforts to restrict reporting. It says 19 journalists are currently held under administrative detention without charge or trial, while others face accusations of “incitement,” including over their speech and social-media activity.
The society also alleges that detained journalists face abuses such as starvation, inadequate medical care, torture, sexual assault and harsh detention conditions. It called on the international community and human-rights organizations to protect journalists, investigate alleged abuses and ensure their right to report freely, particularly on conditions affecting Palestinians.
