Hujjat al-Islam Nazari Monfared, speaking on Tuesday evening at a mourning ceremony for month of Safar held at the office of Grand Ayatollah Nouri-Hamedani, referring to the developments in the final years of the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) life, stated: "An examination of the events of this period of Islamic history shows that the Islamic society, on the verge of the Prophet's (PBUH) passing, faced threats different from those of the early days of the mission."
He added: "In the early years of the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) call, opposition to Islam and to the Prophet (PBUH) himself was mainly open, and the enemy front was known to the people. But with the spread of Islam and the increase in the number of Muslims, the form of some threats changed, and the current of hypocrisy became one of the most important internal dangers facing Islamic society."
The professor at the Qom Seminary continued: "In the final years of the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) life, various regions inclined towards Islam and the number of Muslims increased, but at the same time, the activities of the hypocrites also expanded in society, and this made the threats coming from within Islamic society more complex than before."
He noted: "The Holy Quran, in verses concerning the hypocrites, has also spoken of the existence of this current among the residents of Medina and its surroundings, and this shows that the threat of hypocrisy was not merely an external and open current, but part of it was active within Islamic society."
Hypocrisy, a more complex threat than open enmity
Nazari Monfared, referring to the hypocrites' efforts to harm the Holy Prophet (PBUH), said: "During the Prophet's (PBUH) return from Tabuk, a conspiracy was also formed against him, which shows that the current of hypocrisy had reached a stage in the final years of the Prophet's (PBUH) life where it was even planning for the physical elimination of the leader of Islamic society."
He added: "The fundamental difference between an open enemy and the current of hypocrisy is that the open enemy has made its position clear, but the hypocrite, by maintaining appearances and hiding his true goals, can operate within society, and it is more difficult for the people to recognize him."
This professor at the seminary stated: "In such circumstances, Islamic society needs insight, recognition of political and social currents, and attention to authentic religious criteria more than ever, so that appearances of individuals and currents do not lead to neglect of the realities behind the scenes."
He continued: "The historical experience of early Islam shows that with the growth and expansion of a society, threats do not necessarily disappear; rather, they may take on more complex forms, and for this reason, the recognition of intellectual and political currents becomes more important."
The Prophet (PBUH) was not indifferent to the future of the Ummah
Nazari Monfared, referring to the warnings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) about the seditions after his passing, stated: "When the Prophet (PBUH) warns about future seditions, the question arises: is it possible that he was aware of such dangers but had not devised any measure for the Ummah to face these conditions?"
He said: "The Holy Prophet (PBUH) throughout his mission was sensitive to various issues of Islamic society and had many recommendations for guiding the people and organizing social and religious affairs. Therefore, the issue of the future of the Ummah could not have been outside this framework."
The professor at the Qom Seminary added: "From a rational perspective, it is also difficult to accept that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had formed a society with such breadth and capacity, and had not considered any responsibility for guiding it and preventing discord after his passing."
He noted: "The events that occurred in Islamic society after the passing of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), leading to widespread differences and conflicts, double the importance of examining this issue, and the relationship between the Prophet's (PBUH) warnings about the future and the subsequent events of Islamic history must be taken into consideration."
