Israel Pushes 3,400 Settlement Units in East Jerusalem ahead of Elections

Israeli occupation authorities have advanced three major settlement plans comprising more than 3,400 units across occupied East Jerusalem in recent weeks, according to an Israeli organization report.

The plans target Umm Tuba and Umm Lison, two Palestinian neighborhoods, as well as the illegal Israeli settlement of Gilo.
 
According to Ir Amim, their advancement within a short period represents more than a series of individual planning decisions. The organization warned that the projects would deepen the fragmentation of Palestinian neighborhoods, strengthen Israeli settlement expansion and establish new facts on the ground that could prove increasingly difficult to reverse.
 
Over the past month, the Israeli-controlled Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee deposited a plan for approximately 650 settlement units in Umm Tuba, approved the deposit of another plan for around 450 units in Umm Lison and advanced more than 2,300 additional units in Gilo.
 
The moves come with less than three months remaining before Israeli elections.
 
“What is happening is not a series of separate planning decisions, but rather an integrated policy being implemented at a calculated time,” Ir Amim researcher Aviv Tatarsky said.
 
He said the Israeli regime was pushing ahead “within a few weeks and just before the elections, with three of the largest settlement projects in East Jerusalem.”
 
The organization warned that the location could restrict the movement of Palestinian residents into and around Umm Tuba.
 
The largest of the three projects would expand the illegal Gilo settlement by more than 2,300 units across approximately 195 dunams.
 
Israeli settlements in occupied East Jerusalem and the remainder of the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law.
