Late Ayatollah Khamenei's Legacy Continues to Inspire Islamic Unity
An Iranian seminary scholar has described the late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei's martyrdom as a profound loss for the Muslim world while arguing that it also ushered in a new phase of unity and dynamism across the Islamic community.

Hujjat-ul-Islam Seyyed Mohammad Reza Hosseini, a senior lecturer at the Qom Seminary said the late leader's martyrdom was "a very heavy loss for the Islamic world," but added that it had also become a catalyst for renewed vitality and development within the Muslim Ummah.
Speaking during a discussion on the concept of Islamic unity, Hosseini said the unprecedented funeral ceremonies held for Ayatollah Khamenei and his family reflected the deep affection of Muslims around the world for the late leader, the Islamic Revolution, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He said the scale of the ceremonies demonstrated the enduring influence of the late leader's ideas and his prominent place in the hearts of Muslims.
According to Hosseini, one of Ayatollah Khamenei's foremost priorities after assuming the leadership of the Islamic Republic in 1989 was promoting unity among Muslims.
He noted that, in its common usage, the term "unity" refers to becoming one, acting collectively, and gathering around a common axis. However, he argued that the concept takes on a broader and deeper meaning within the late leader's political thought.
Hosseini said that while the concept of unity is rooted in the Holy Quran, the term itself became more widely used during the era of the Imams, acquiring broader significance in response to the historical and social challenges faced by the Muslim community.
The scholar also distinguished between national unity and Islamic unity, describing national unity as solidarity among different ethnic, religious, and cultural groups within the borders of a single country.
By contrast, he said, Islamic unity transcends national boundaries and is founded on shared religious principles. According to Hosseini, it encompasses solidarity among followers of different faiths, efforts to foster closer relations among Islamic schools of thought, and the promotion of mutual understanding despite differences in jurisprudence, politics, Quranic interpretation, and theology.
Hosseini concluded that, in Ayatollah Khamenei's political thought, the concept of "unity," much like the notion of the "Ummah," is dynamic and multidimensional, requiring careful scholarly examination to fully understand its significance.
