Iraq’s holy shrines ready to mark Muharram mourning processions

The holy shrines in Iraq are preparing to commemorate the Muharram mourning processions marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Abdul Hussein Mohammad, head of the executive bureau at the Imam Hussein (AS) Shrine, said that black Muharram banners are being installed across the courtyards and throughout the shrine, Taqrib News Agency (TNA) reported.
 
He added that technical teams are implementing a plan to prepare the holy shrine and provide the necessary services for pilgrims expected to attend the Muharram ceremonies.

 
The city of Kadhimiya, home to the holy shrine of Imam Musa al-Kadhim and his grandson Mohammad al-Jawad, is also preparing for the mourning processions.
 
Based on instructions from Haidar Abdul Amir Mahdi, Secretary-General of the Holy Shrine of al-Kazimayn and a servant of the shrine, service department personnel have begun implementing a comprehensive plan to prepare the premises for the months of Muharram and Safar.
 
As part of these preparations, black drapery is being installed and the porticos, the Kazimi courtyard, and the holy shrine are being adorned in black.

 
In addition, the flags atop the two sacred domes of the Imams of al-Kazimayn will be replaced with black flags, an official symbol marking the commencement of the rituals.
 
Muslims across the globe mark the Muharram mourning ceremonies commemorating martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and several of his companions and relatives in the Battle of Karbala 14 centuries ago.
 
Millions of pilgrims from different countries and across Iraq head for the holy shrines in Karbala, Najaf and Kadhimiya to pay tribute to Imam Hussein (AS), an epitome of justice-seeking, freedom and uprising against tyrants.
