Imam Hussein shrine braces for upcoming Muharram processions

The Department of Hussaini Rituals and Processions at the Imam Hussein Shrine has announced comprehensive preparations for the upcoming Muharram ceremonies and the Arbaeen pilgrimage, highlighting a significant expansion in organizational efforts this year.

According to the department’s head, Mohammad Karim Aziz, a total of 14,000 financial support approvals have been issued for mourning and service processions arriving from across Iraq and abroad, Taqrib News Agency (TNA) has cited Iraqi media as saying.
 
In addition, 746 official permits have been granted specifically for processions operating during the first ten days of Muharram.
 
A joint committee comprising representatives from Bain al-Haramain, Karbala Police Command, and the Imam Hussein Shrine has been formed to oversee the authorization process.
 
Accordingly, the programs for Muharram 2026 are set to begin with the traditional flag-changing ceremony on the first night and will continue through Ashura, culminating in the special mourning rituals performed then.
 
Authorities have coordinated multiple logistical measures, including organizing the entry of mourning groups from surrounding areas, preparing four designated platforms, installing audio systems, and facilitating live media coverage across key locations within the shrine.

 
The department confirmed that strict regulations govern the activities of all processions, with continuous monitoring to ensure compliance. It also noted a 25 percent increase in the number of processions compared to last year.
 
Muslims across the globe observe Muharram mourning ceremonies which mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad who was martyred, together with his companions and household members, in an unequal war with the tyrant ruler of the time, Yazid ibn-Muawiyyah.
 
Millions of Muslims descend in the Iraqi holy cities to visit the holy shrines and attend the ceremonies at the site where the historical Battle of Karbala happened 14 centuries ago.
