UN warns over half of its staff killed in 2025 served in Gaza

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres says more than half of its staff killed in line of duty in 2025 served the agencies in Gaza Strip.

Antonio Guterres made the announcement at the annual commemoration ceremony held on Monday morning.
 
According to Guterres, 136 UN personnel lost their lives in the line of duty in 2025 among them were 80 people who served with the UN agency serving Palestine refugees (UNRWA).
 
He said that more UN colleagues have been killed in the enclave than in any other conflict or disaster in the history of the organization.
 
“Some died alongside their families in their homes or in the places they sought refuge,” Gutteres said and added, “Others were killed while carrying out their duties in offices, in shelters and in the communities they served.”
 
He emphasized that the UN personnel must never be targeted. Attacks on peacekeepers and humanitarian workers are a violation of international law, including international humanitarian law.”

 
The UN says Gaza has been the deadliest conflict in its history for UN personnel in such a short period. By March 2025, at least 280 UN colleagues had been killed since the war began. Most were employees of the UN relief agency UNRWA.
 
The UN, UNRWA, and many humanitarian organizations have repeatedly condemned Israeli forces over failing to protect UN personnel and facilities and have called for independent investigations into these incidents.
